Responsibilities

The data held by DVLA is used for various purposes right from catching over speeding vehicles to getting to the tax evaders. The main aim behind establishment of DVLA was to help public in having their transactions done easily without much hassle; helping courts in their legal proceedings by providing details of vehicles and the drivers under question, assisting police to enforce rules and help catch tax evaders and defaulters easily and guiding Driving Standards Agency in road safety. A few of the responsibilities are as explained below.

  • Driver Information

DVLA is responsible for recording driver details such as their medical conditions, details of the license endorsement and disqualification of licences.

    • License Endorsement

Endorsement in context of license refers to the authority that is included in your driving-license, allowing you to operate some types of vehicles. These are single digit alphanumeric values like “A” stands for vehicles with Air Brakes, “S” – for school buses, “M”- for motorcycles, “6” – for motor cycle learners and so forth.

    • Disqualification

The driving-license may be disqualified due to various reasons like if you are convicted of an offence using motor vehicles, driving a defective one (which might possibly pose threat to other vehicles on road) and like-wise. Usually courts are the ones that are authorised to disqualify the licenses.

    • Medical status

DVLA should be informed of any sickness that you have so that safety is put on top most priority. If you have any disability like epilepsy, mental illness, strokes, visual impairments, physical disabilities that could affect your driving skills then you need to inform DVLA. You may be even fined a thousand British pounds for hiding the information and may even be prosecuted in case of accidents.

  • Licenses

Another main responsibility of DVLA is to issue vehicle driving-license. Usually these are printed on plastic photocards, (cards displaying passport size photographs for easy identification by authorities) and other information like your name, date of birth, place of birth, issuing authority and so on.

DVLA contact numbers, which are most helpful in case of any assistance required, regarding the driver registration or vehicle registration, are 0300-790-6802 (for registration query of vehicles), 0300-790-6801 (for driving-license related queries) and 0870-042-1101 (for generic queries).
